Make the first edit useful

What a creator or brand should put in a production brief before an editor starts.

Editorial note

A useful brief tells an editor who the viewer is, why the moment matters and what the viewer should do next. A funny gaming moment, a product explanation and a founder story need different edits, even when all three become vertical video.

Supply permission to use the footage, the source file or timestamp, the target platform, caption style, delivery format and one review owner. Include a reference for pacing or framing and explain which part you like. A reference is not permission to reuse its music, footage or likeness.

Agree the number of edits, revision scope and acceptance criteria before promising a posting volume. Keep production cost separate from creator payouts, paid distribution and any campaign budget. A completed video is a deliverable; a guaranteed viral result is not.

Begin with one defined batch. Review watch behaviour, saves, qualified enquiries or another relevant outcome once it has actually run. Use what changed to improve the next brief, rather than presenting a mockup as a client case study.
